John Blickenstaff of San Mateo’s Junipero Serra High School has enriched the lives of many young people by selflessly donating his time, his energy and his sporting gear.

John’s efforts have led to the donation of thousands of dollars of baseball, basketball, volleyball and soccer equipment to schools in San Mateo County and San Francisco – schools that need but can ill-afford such athletic gear.

John and his friends developed the idea of hosting gear round-ups after surveying their garages and realizing other young athletes could use the items. S tarting with their own homes, their friends’ homes, their neighbors’ homes and the homes of other students at Serra, John and others began gear drives and set up collection bins at school.

Thanks to his efforts, athletes who may not have the means to buy sporting gear have enjoyed the use of cleats of all types, balls, bats, skis, ski poles, ski boots, sports bags and a variety of other equipment.

|
John, a junior, and his friends have now turned their attention toward collecting equipment to help less-fortunate schools bolster their science programs. However, their sports-equipment legacy continues through various relatives and friends at other schools who are busy collecting athletic gear.
|

John and friends are also planning a Spring 2008 roundup of more sports equipment.

San Mateo County is fortunate to have John Blickenstaff as a resident who cares about his community and who makes a difference in the lives of so many people. He is truly a role model for all of us.
