A 45-minute discussion followed immediately after by Dr. Richard Jackson's presentation on the damaging effects of the built environment. The result of the 35 small works groups identified more than 50 actions that can be taken by the community and individually to improve San Mateo County’s livability. Below is a sampling of actions that can be taken to improve San Mateo County's livability.

Physical Education in School |
- Affordable after school programs that include more sports options
- Varying school-related activities to accommodate kids with less physical abilities
- Fitness testing should be required
- Walk the kids to school

- Better consumer education e.g. labels on food products
- Parent education
- Include health topics in schools
- Healthy foods for students @ schools
- Giving alternative food options for families
- Improve nutrition at schools

- Support local merchants
- Patronizing farmers’ markets
- Support local agriculture

- More cooperation between cities and counties in affordable housing and land use

Access to Transit/Housing |
- Encourage development along transportation corridors
- Public transport system – limited. Look @ “scooter” in San Carlos as a model – transportation for seniors (had conducted surveys in Redwood City )

- Gardening as a way to get kids out
- Schools can include farm-to-school programming in their wellness policies
- Green areas in communities
- More resources in to parks & recreation
