About the Commission  Printer Friendly View

The Commission on Disabilities was established on September 10, 1991 to represent the estimated 15% of residents living in San Mateo County with developmental, physical, mental, sensory and other disabilities, as well as the community at large. The Commission provides opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in, and influence the development of, public policy which promotes the full integration of people with disabilities in their communities.

The Commission aids in the development and implementation of the Strategic Plan Goals and Objectives for Older Adults and Adults with Disabilities.

The purposes of the Commission are to:

1. Promote programs that provide the highest quality of services and foster positive attitudes about people with disabilities.

2. Review and report on the availability and accessibility of community services to people with special needs.

3. Establish a channel of communication with the community to garner input and to educate the general public as to the needs of persons with disabilities.

4. Provide direct input on issues related to disability to the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors.

The Commission General Meeting is held on the 4th Thursday of each month from 3:00 P.M. - 5:00 P.M. at the Health Services Agency located at 225 W. 37th Avenue, San Mateo. The Commission does not meet in August or December.

The Commission invites the public to attend all meetings.

In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), auxiliary aids and services for Commission meetings will be provided upon request when given three days notice.
