STANDING COMMITTEES The Commission on Disabilities invites people with disabilities and others from the community to serve as ex-officio members on committees.       THE AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT (ADA) COMPLIANCE COMMITTEE 1st Thursday of the month 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. 225 - 37th Avenue, San Mateo - Room 100 (Please contact the CoD Staff to confirm meeting location) The ADA committee advocates for improved access for people with disabilities at county buildings and facilities by developing, prioritizing and monitoring the county wide ADA transition plan. The committee also reviews county ADA policies and procedures.   LEGISLATION AND ADVOCACY COMMITTEE 1st Monday of the month 3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. 225 - 37th Avenue, San Mateo - Room 155 The legislation and advocacy committee reviews, responds to, and proposes legislation and policies which affect people with disabilities. The committee also identifies and gathers information to assist with the education and advocacy functions of the commission.   COMMISSION ON AGING/COMMISSION ON DISABILITIES JOINT HOUSING COMMITTEE 3rd Thursday of the month 1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. 225 - 37th Avenue, San Mateo - Room 100 (Please contact the CoD Staff to confirm meeting location, date and time) The Joint Housing Committee was established in September of 1998 to assist the Commission on Aging (CoA) and Commission on Disabilities (CoD) in addressing housing concerns related to seniors and people with disabilities in San Mateo County. The goal of the Committee is to promote both affordable and accessible housing opportunities allowing seniors and people with disabilities to age in place by continuing their independence and dignity.   SPECIAL EVENTS 4th Monday of the month 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. 225 - 37th Avenue, San Mateo - Room 155 The Special Events Committee plans and oversees special projects such as the People Who Care Awards.   AD-HOC COMMITTEES   TRANSITIONING TO INDPENDENCE It is natural for people to want to live independently and lead productive lives. However, for people with disabilities, there are a number of challenges that can make it difficult in gaining their independence. To assist in this effort, the San Mateo County Commission on Disabilities, the California Children Services and the County Office of Education co-sponsored a workshop in October entitled, "Transitioning to Independence for Children and Adults with Disabilities." A panel of distinguished professionals in the legal, financial planning, rehabilitation, and education fields presented valuable information about successful transitioning to independence. There were also representatives from various agencies that provide services to people with disabilities to provide information and materials about the programs in the County designed to assist people in gaining their independence. This workshop was well attended with over 60 people including consumers, family members and professionals. With the success of this workshop, plans are being made to present future workshops on this topic.
