The People Who Care Awards
The People Who Care Awards began as a luncheon sponsored by the San Mateo County Coordinating Council on Developmental Disabilities (SMCCDD) in 1984 to honor those who have made a significant difference in the lives of people with disabilities. They recognized an individual, agency, and business who provided opportunities to people with disabilities. When the SMCCDD merged with the Disabilities Task Force to form the Commission on Disabilities in 1991, this event became a dinner celebration. In 1995 a new category was added to acknowledge a media organization that portrays the issues of people with disabilities in a positive way. The Lifetime Advocacy Award was added in 1996. In 1998, the individual award category was divided to honor a volunteer, a professional, and an educator and the Charlene Silva Outstanding Leadership award was added in 2003. An Art Showcase was added in 2003 to highlight the abilities of San Mateo County artists with disabilities. The reception held just prior to the People Who Care Awards Dinner features two and three dimensional artwork.
