Living & Working with Diabetes  Printer Friendly View

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. The cause of diabetes is a mystery, although both genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play roles.

Researchers have demonstrated time and time again how important it is for a diabetic to vigilantly monitor blood glucose levels and to see a doctor on a regular basis for testing and medical evaluation. This regimen significantly reduces the likelihood of future complications and disability so often associated with this disease.

Diabetes is one of the fastest growing medical problems in the United States. We are alarmed about this growing health problem, and want to assure that County employees are well informed about this disease, and know how to minimize its costly effects.
