The San Mateo County web site is currently being upgraded for an improved user experience.
The County Home page and a few departments are implementing the new "look and feel"
along with an improved search and other new features.
Please be aware that a number of departments
will continue to retain the former user interface during this transition period.

| What is Asthma? |
|
Asthma is a chronic disease of the airways in the lungs that makes it hard for people to breathe - the airways get narrower, and air can't move in and out as easily. Tobacco smoke, infections, and allergic "triggers" like dust mites, furry animals, molds, and pollens make it worse. Asthma can almost always be controlled with medication and by avoiding triggers; rarely, some people still die from it.
