The aging of the Baby Boomer population is fast becoming a priority concern for San Mateo County. Baby Boomers are people born between 1946 and 1964, and are considered to be the largest generational cohort in recent history. Although projection figures exist, none have taken into account the uniqueness of San Mateo County nor provide the level of detail necessary to inform local planning and policy decisions. Service needs in the areas of health, housing and transportation are expected to change along with this demographic shift.
In order to adequately plan for coordinated services for the years 2020 and 2030, San Mateo County seeks to accurately predict this population’s future characteristics, including racial/ethnic composition, income distribution, housing preferences, and disability rates. To meet these objectives, representatives from the San Mateo County Health Department, Department of Housing, San Mateo Transit District, Health Plan of San Mateo, San Mateo Medical Center, and the Commission on Aging collaborated to create a model that projects the characteristics of the adults over the age of 65 in San Mateo County for the years 2020 and 2030.
The model was adopted by the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors in October 2007. Special attention was given to people born between 1931 and 1964 because they will represent the majority of the population over 65 in the years 2020 and 2030. The Lewin Group was hired to undertake this endeavor. It is hoped that this rich, new local data source will help inform the strategic planning of City and County Departments, as well as our community partners.
