Cultural Competence Stipend Application Information
We have approximately 20 Cultural Competence Stipends available to trainees and interns who are providing mental health services within our Senior, Adult or Youth system of care. The overall intention is to help provide more culturally competent services to clients. We award stipends based upon the student's ability to add to the cultural competence of services we provide, especially to underserved populations. Each stipend is $5,000 for a minimum of 24 hours of work. Stipends will be pro-rated if the student works fewer hours.
Interns/trainees receiving stipends may be asked on an as needed basis to provide services to a client on another treatment team who requires services that fall within the trainee's area of competence.
The following are the priorities that will be followed when awarding stipends.
A. Priority
1. Highest priority is given to applicants who are bi-lingual or bi-lingual and bi-cultural and whose cultural background and experience is similar to the clients he or she will serve.
2. The next highest priority is given to applicants whose cultural background and experience is similar to the client population he or she will serve, but who provide no language expertise.
3. The 3rd priority is only activated if there are stipend dollars remaining in the second review round (after September) and after all higher priority applicants have been awarded. Under these circumstances, a full or partial stipend may be given to applicants from a cultural background or with language skills relevant to a client population that is more rarely served.
B. Services to special populations: It is also a priority to award stipends to student's who have previous experience or abilities serving populations that are considered underserved by our system. Because our system is constantly devising new programs to serve the underserved, a list of such populations is difficult to assemble and will change from time to time. At the current time, examples of such special populations might include gay/lesbian/transgender clients or physically disabled clients with serious mental illness. Students qualifying under this criterion will receive lower priority than a student qualifying under criterion "1".
