SAN MATEO COUNTY CELEBRATES OLDER AMERICANS MONTH WITH POETRY

SAN MATEO, Calif. - The month of May is recognized nationally as "Older Americans Month" to highlight and acknowledge the unique contributions of seniors to the nation and our local communities. In San Mateo County, two major events are scheduled to celebrate Older Americans Month.

On Tuesday, May 1, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors will present a proclamation to the Commission on Aging designating May 2007 as "Older Americans Month." This proclamation will be presented at 9 a.m. in the Board of Supervisors' Chambers in Redwood City. The Commission on Aging will also present their annual report to the Board.

On Monday, May 14, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., the Board of Supervisors and the Commission on Aging will co-host a reception for the participants of the Commission on Aging Annual Intergenerational Poetry Contest. The winning poets will read their poems and prizes will be awarded to the first, second and third place winners. This event will be held in Room 100 of the San Mateo County Health Department building, located at 225 37th Avenue in San Mateo.

The public is invited to attend both events.
