SPECIAL WEAPONS AND TACTICS (S.W.A.T.) TEAM Specially trained law enforcement personnel equipped with a series of specialized tactics and weapons for containment and control of barricaded subjects and high-risk incidents. BOMB SQUAD OES operates the only Bomb Squad in San Mateo County. This unit responds to every jurisdiction in the County and is on-call seven (7) days a week. The unit utilizes bomb detection canines to assist in locating explosive devices. The Bomb Squad has been actively involved in the destruction of explosive materials gathered from all jurisdictions. CEREMONIAL UNIT 15 Deputy Sheriff's that perform color guard and honor guard details at functions such as law enforcement funerals and other formal events.  CROWD CONTROL TEAM Two 12 person tactical teams used for civil disturbances and perimeter security for a variety of emergency operations. Cliff Rescue DEPUTY CLIFF RESCUE UNIT 12 Deputy Sheriff's trained for cliff rescue procedures on Devil's Slide and other coastal cliffs. HOSTAGE NEGOTIATION TEAM Six deputies specially trained to handle, through negotiations, incidents involving barricaded or suicidal individuals, or situations where hostages are being held. Acting in coordination with S.W.A.T., negotiators utilize unique equipment and tactics in their efforts to peacefully resolve volatile, potentially dangerous incidents. The Hostage Negotiation Team's goal is for a peaceful resolution to a crisis situation without the use of force or loss of life.
