Skilled Crafts
Skilled Craft occupations perform jobs that require special manual skill and a thorough and comprehensive knowledge of the processes involved in the work which is acquired through on-the-job training and experience, apprenticeship or other formal training programs. Automotive Mechanic, Carpenter, Stationary Engineer, Road Equipment Operator, and Building Inspector are some classifications belonging to this category.
Service and Maintenance
Service and Maintenance occupations perform duties that result in or contribute to the comfort, convenience, hygiene or safety of the general public or that contribute to the upkeep and care of buildings, facilities, or grounds of public property. Workers in this group may operate machinery. Custodian, Utility Workers, Road Maintenance Worker, and Park Rangers are some classifications belonging to this category.
Office/Administrative
Office/Administrative occupations are responsible for internal and external communications, recording and retrieval of data and/or information and other paperwork required in an office. Office Assistant, Fiscal Office Assistant, Executive Secretary, Public Services Specialist, Legal Secretary, Medical Records Technician, and Patient Services Assistant are some of the classifications belonging to this category.
Paraprofessional
Paraprofessional occupations perform some of the duties of a professional or technician in a supportive role that usually requires less formal training and/or experience than normally required for professional or technical status. Library Assistant, Food Service Worker, Licensed Vocational Nurse, Medical Services Assistant and Community Worker are some classifications belonging to this category.
Protective Services
Protective Services occupations are entrusted with law enforcement, public safety, security and protection from destructive forces. Deputy Sheriff, Sheriff’s Correctional Officer, and District Attorney’s Inspector are some classifications belonging to this category.
Technical
Technical occupations require a combination of basic scientific or technical knowledge and manual skills, which can be obtained through, specialized post-secondary school education or equivalent on-the-job training. Public Works Technician, Cook, Licensed Psychiatric Technician, Radiologic Technologist, Benefits Analyst, and Child Support Officer are some classifications belonging to this category.
Professional
Professional occupations require specialized and theoretical knowledge that is usually acquired through college training or work experience and other training that provides comparable knowledge. Assistant Engineer, Librarian, Accountant, Medical Technologist, Nurse, Marriage and Family Therapist, Psychiatric Social Worker, Social Worker and Deputy Probation Officer are some classifications belonging to this category.
Management
Management occupations have significant responsibility for formulating, administering or managing the implementation of County policies or programs or having responsibility for directing the work of subordinates through lower level supervision. Agency Director, Assistant Department Director and Elected Department Director are some classifications belonging to this category.
