How do I know what positions are currently open?

You can find information on job openings by:

  • Visiting the Employment Opportunities page  of the San Mateo County website at www.co.sanmateo.ca.us. Here you can view job bulletins for current County job openings and a listing of non-profit job opportunities. You can also get information on how you can get notified by email of future job openings.
  • Calling the County Jobline at (650) 368-7214.
  • Viewing the Employment Opportunities Bulletin that is published weekly and is available for review at many County offices and community locations.
  • Visiting the Human Resources office at 455 County Center, 1st Floor, Redwood City.

The website and the Jobline are in operation 24 hours a day, seven days a week and are updated every Friday morning.

Who can apply?

If the job bulletin states that the recruitment is "Open" or "Open and Promotional," anyone who meets the minimum qualifications may apply.

If the job bulletin states that the recruitment is "Promotional Only" or "Departmental Promotional Only," then you must be a current County employee who has completed 6 months of employment to apply.

What is a job bulletin?

Once you have identified the position(s) you want to apply for, you will need the job bulletin(s) to learn more about the position(s). Job Bulletins contain detailed information about a specific job. It tells you:

  • The exact title of the job
  • The salary
  • Who is eligible
  • The last day to submit an application
  • The types of duties people perform in the job
  • The minimum amount of education, experience, and the knowledge and skills required to apply for the job
  • The types of examinations that will be given
  • The examination dates
  • The name of the Employee and Public Services Department employee who is in charge of the recruitment

Where do I get the job bulletin and the application packet?

In addition to the job bulletin, you will need to obtain an application packet in order to apply for the position. The packet includes a supplemental questionnaire in most cases, and the standard County application form. You may view job bulletins and apply on-line at www.co.sanmateo.ca.us or request an application packet from the Human Resources Department in Redwood City or call (650) 363-4343.
