Aging and Adult Services: Prevention  Printer Friendly View

Aging and Adult Services Division participates in a number of prevention activities across a variety of programs. Examples include:

Adult Abuse Prevention Collaborative (AAPC): a group of consumers and representatives from community-based organizations who are interested in preventing elder and dependent adult abuse. The collaborative was responsible for the development of a drama troupe which provided education about elder and dependent adult abuse across the County. A video of the performance with a facilitated workshop is available to community groups. For more information about AAPC contact Aging and Adult Services Commission and Provider Services Unit (650) 573-2700.

Active for Life™: a free program promoted by the San Mateo County Health Services Agency Health Education Unit and funded by a grant from The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, is designed to motivate and guide adults in setting and maintaining weekly exercise goals. Participants receive a free pedometer; ideas on how to make exercise fun, safe, and affordable; a monthly newsletter; and other materials and health programs to help them meet their exercise goals. To qualify for this free program you must be a resident of San Mateo County, age fifty or older, who exercises infrequently or not at all. For more information about Active for Life™, contact Doris Estremera (650) 573-2003.

Senior Medication Management Project: provided in collaboration with the Health Services Agency Health Education Unit, this program increases awareness about safe and proper medication use. For more information contact Jaslin Yu (650) 573-2977.

Wise and Well: provided by Mills-Peninsula Senior Focus, the Wise and Well Program provides a comprehensive health promotion program consisting of screening, community education, and individual counseling.  Selected program sites serve low-income and minority senior communities.
