Welcome to the San Mateo Psychiatry Residency  Printer Friendly View

The goal of the San Mateo County Psychiatry Residency Training Program is to graduate psychiatrists who excel in psychiatric knowledge and clinical skills, and who intuitively grasp the complex and human aspects of modern psychiatry.  To this end, we try to create an academic environment that promotes both personal and professional growth.  In doing so, we feel strongly that the best approach is a humanistic one, and that we are most successful when we come together as a professional family.

We cherish our diverse backgrounds, cultures, and belief systems; and because of the unique perspective each individual brings to our program, we support a tolerant atmosphere and an appreciation of divergent views.  In the learning environment we emphasize team-building and study groups, and in the greater community we promote a sense of social responsibility.  At the same time, we recognize that each resident follows a unique developmental path and may differ in the way he or she learns best.  Our small program allows us to tailor educational experiences for each resident.  Moreover, residents feel heard and respected in our system and are considered an integral part of our community.

We hope our personalized and progressive approach nurtures and guides each resident to his or her full professional potential.  Although our residents choose a variety of career paths after graduating, many continue to pursue two time-honored San Mateo County Mental Health traditions - innovation and leadership.  These traditions date back to the 1960s, when San Mateo County General Hospital became one of the first model community mental health centers in the country.  Our county’s unique dedication to mental health and the diverse patient population it attracts make it an exceptional community in which to train.  As we continue to seek creative, constructive solutions to the critical problems facing today’s mental health care system, our residency remains an ideal place to become a part of this process.
