WIA Operations  Printer Friendly View

The federal Workforce Investment Act (WIA) was signed into law by President Clinton in 1998. WIA provides a comprehensive range of workforce development activities through statewide and local organizations to benefit job seekers, laid off workers, youth, incumbent workers, veterans, persons with disabilities, and employers.

The purpose of the WIA program is to promote an increase in the job placement, job retention, earnings, and occupational skills improvement by participants, thus increasing the quality of the workforce and reducing welfare dependency. San Mateo County will receive approximately 3 million dollars from the State government this year to provide services for adults, laid-off workers, and youth.

The information in this area is designed for providers or contractors that provide Workforce Investment Act services.

If you are you out of work, desire a career change or want to upgrade your skills to get a better paying job, WIA services may be able to assist you on your employment path.

No-fee services are available to individuals who meet certain eligibility requirements. You may need to bring a state-issued driver's license or identification card, a Resident Alien Card or a United States passport, or other specific documents to enroll in WIA. Income eligibility may also apply.

WIA services provide opportunities for:

  • Career counseling and assessment services
  • Personalized employment planning and case management
  • Skills upgrade or retraining
  • Job placement services
  • Follow-up and retention services
