The functions of the Bureau of Professional Standards includes: candidate recruitment and background investigation; departmental personnel and payroll management; employee relations activities; investigation of complaints regarding officers and non-sworn employees; evaluation and certification of citizens requesting special permits; and internal administration of the employee disability program.
Additionally, this Bureau is responsible for administration of all phases of departmental employee training including State-mandated Peace Officer Standards & Training Commission (POST), and Board of Corrections Standards & Training for Corrections (STC) training, as well as specialized instruction in a broad range of law enforcement functions and activities. In performing many of these functions, the Bureau works closely and effectively with staff from the Human Resources Department as well as the County Counsel.

Supports full service accounting, purchasing, and billings for the Sheriff's Office, special program funds, and several multi-jurisdictional joint powers organizations supported by the department.

Training Unit

Manages and facilitates the training for over 600 sworn and civilian personnel. To aid in quality training, an agreement with the the San Mateo County Community College District to construct a new Law Enforcement Regional Training Academy has been formalized. The new Academy will be an added resource for training and recruiting of prospective Deputies and law enforcement professionals.
