SAN MATEO COUNTY PSYCHIATRY RESIDENCY COMMENDED FOR EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATIONAL DESIGN

SAN MATEO, Calif. - San Mateo County Psychiatry Residency received a remarkable evaluation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The committee commended the program for excellence in educational design, for capitalizing on all available resources and for implementing an active learning process that involves a community of scholars in faculty and residents. The program earned the longest accreditation period allowed of five years.

ACGME conducted the site visit in November 2006, and the Psychiatry Residency program received the results this past week. The ACGME is responsible for the accreditation of post-MD medical training programs within the United States.

The Residency was founded in 1967, and is a general adult psychiatry residency. From approximately 200 applicants, four new residents are added each year, for a total of sixteen residents over four postgraduate years. It is a division of San Mateo County Mental Health Services, and residents do inpatient clinical rotations at the San Mateo Medical Center. The main outpatient training occurs in the county's three mental health clinics.

Over eighty percent of the graduates continue their careers in the public sector.
