Classification, Position Count and Salary Information

  • I need to compare job classifications and get current salary information.
    • All county classification specifications and current salary ranges for all County jobs are here. These are listed in alphabetical order by classification title. Prior to searching for a title you may wish to look at the listing of Position/Salary listings by Department to compare what our title is for similar work to what you are looking for.

      Salaries are listed
here. This section provides the exact hourly rate with approximate monthly and annual salary rates. If you need exact biweekly salary information, you can use this  link.

  • I don't know what the right County job title is to make a match.
    • There are two general ways you can try to get this information. If you know what County Department or Division people doing this work would likely be working in you can look at the Position/Salary Listings by Department to get an idea what we call jobs. For example, if you are looking for recycling jobs, in the Position/Salary Listings by Department section you will find a Waste Management unit in Public Works. If you click on Public Works and page down to Waste Management you will find the classifications of Resources Conservation Specialist I/II/III. These may be what you are looking for.

The second general approach is to use the
Classification Specifications link to get the full list of County jobs and then use the search feature to narrow the list down to the jobs that might have the right words in the title. Then you can click on the classification specification to see if it is the right one. For example, you are looking for Vocational Nurse but can't find it in the V's. If you use the search function and enter "Vocational", the system will come back with Licensed Vocational Nurse as well as classes for Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors. Then you can click on Licensed Vocational Nurse to check the classification specification for the correct match as well as get the salary information.

  • I have job titles and just need to get current salary information.
    • The  Job Classification Table give you access to a downloadable Excel spreadsheet that contains all salary information as well as all of the following information about County classifications:
      • Classification Code
      • Classification Title
      • Hourly, biweekly, and approximate monthly salaries at each step in the salary range for the classification
      • Workgroup assignment for overtime.
      • Representation Status and Bargaining Unit
      • Pre-employment medical requirements
      • Security clearance requirements
      • Probation periods
      • Ongoing medical examination requirements

  • I need information on future scheduled salary increases.
    • The Employee Relations division provides downloadable PDF files of all of our MOU's and Resolutions. The Salaries section of these documents generally provide any future salary increases that have been established.

  • I need the number of positions by classification/department
    • The Position/Salary Listings by Department link identifies all positions by classification that are allocated to a specific department/agency as well as the salary range for each class (bottom and top step).

  • I need the total number of County positions.
    • The Position/Salary Listings by Department link identifies position totals by department. You can either go through department by department and add these up or use the total positions number of 5287 (as of January 11, 2005) as a very close approximation.
  • I need information on shift differentials, on-call pay, bi-lingual pay and other special compensation arrangements.
    • The Employee Relations division provides downloadable PDF files of all of our MOU's and Resolutions. All special pay types are included in these documents and can most easily be found by looking at the table of contents for each MOU (the Resolutions for un-represented employees are not large enough for us to have developed tables of contents for them).

  • I need organization charts for your departments.
    • High level structured organization charts are in the  County Budget Document. Detailed organization charts are not kept centrally. You will need to contact the individual departments for which you want the charts.

  • I need information on your retirement plan(s), respective employee and employer contributions, plan benefits and related information.
    • The Employee Relations division provides downloadable PDF files of all of our MOU's and Resolutions. Employer pickup of employee contributions are in these documents. All other information about the retirement plans can be found at the San Mateo County retirement system web site, SamCERA.
